I was out for a drink a while ago with someone I respect very much. This guy started a charity that has achieved some truly remarkable things, so I was shocked when his response to something I said (I can’t remember what) was:
“Well of course Tom. You’re a capitalist.”
It seemed like a slur from someone who’s approval I seeked.
I was taken aback. The term ‘capitalist’ to me now only has negative connotations. I picture Wall Street guys burning dollar bills and Corporations taking advantage of cheap foreign labor and the environment. I’m not one of those guys. I run a business, sure. I’m not like that though. Am I?
Capitalism was, and still is to many, a great source of pride. It is a system that is supposed to help societies grow and develop to the benefit of everyone. The modern-day vision of the wildly rich and large companies taking advantage of all and everything around them to further their own financial gain, it seems to me, is not far off the mark. Am I part of this?
When I’m really honest with myself I probably am. Sure, I run my business as fairly as I can. I treat my team well and I like to think I’m honest and maintain strong ethics. Am I taking advantage other people and the environment for personal financial gain though? Yes.
I want to change this. I think that capitalism doesn’t need to be a dirty word. I want to work towards running my business in such a way as it can support my family, grow, AND have positive social impact at the same time. Next time someone calls me a capitalist I want to feel proud.
